Fully qualified British Sign Language Interpreter

About

My Story

I was born in London, but grew up in Sussex. When I was 16 years old, my mother had an opportunity to go on a BSL Level 1 course through her work. One evening, mum was sharing about how on Monday evenings she wouldn’t be home because she would be out learning sign language. I thought it sounded interesting and asked if it would be possible to join. A few weeks later we started Signature’s BSL Level 1course together At Crawley College. I quickly realised I enjoyed it much more than any of the A-Levels I was studying, and wondered whether it would be possible to study at degree level. I was fortunate enough to study at The University of Bristol at the prestigious and internationally acclaimed Centre For Deaf Studies. It was there I studied my BSc in Deaf Studies, specialising in interpreting. I had originally planned to leave university and become a Teacher for the Deaf, and thought that studying interpreting first would ensure my language skills were the best they could be, but I ended up falling in love with interpreting and never looked back.

Following my University education, I embarked on a year of travel and work within deaf communities across the world. Highlights of this period include solo exploration across Africa and Southeast Asia and an invaluable experience working in a restaurant staffed by deaf people in Tanzania. These experiences have honed my interpreting skills and deepened my appreciation for the richness of deaf culture worldwide. They also gave me the ability to learn Tanzanian Sign Language and to be able to communicate with deaf people around the world in International Sign.

Upon my return to the UK, I settled in Worcester, where I worked for a local deaf charity. As personal Assistant to the Chief Executive, who was deaf himself, I provided communication support in various settings, from board meetings to daily administrative tasks. It was during this time that I completed my NVQ in Interpreting and officially registered as a fully qualified Interpreter in 2018.

Since then, my journey as a freelance interpreter has been one of becoming grounded in my skillset and continuing to gain experience in more domains. Across diverse industries and settings, I've showcased my expertise, knowledge and passion, whether it's on television sets or working alongside deaf relay translators.
